The cast iron vessel has been the quintessential cooking apparatus for a very, very long time.
Some sites will say upwards of 2000 years. Needless to say, their track record speaks for itself. What other cookware types do you have at your disposal which you can put in the coals of a campfire, use on your stove top, and throw in your oven? Not many if I had to guess. It is hard to compete with the durability, versatility, and heat retention of cast iron both at home and out camping. We have taken ours on every camping trip whether tent camping or glamping it up style since 1997.
If properly seasoned and maintained, a cast iron pan will maintain it’s non-stick finish and be much easier to clean.
Where people run into issues is they try to clean them with dish soap like regular pans which removes the seasoned coating. They then will also begin to rust and most people throw them out thinking they are beyond repair. Proper care of cast iron is essential if you want to maintain the versatility they offer. We won’t get into all of the details on how to season and care for your pan set as there are several sites out there that do a wonderful job at it like this site here How To Clean A Cast Iron Pan not to mention a starter book that comes with the 7 piece set.
I would, however, like to talk about the Lodge 7 Piece Sporting Goods Cast Iron Cookware Set of cast iron pans as this is an amazing starter set!
You get a 10” skillet and a 5qt camp Dutch Oven with a lid which will allow you to reak culinary havoc as much as you like. Keep in mind when talking cost; if properly maintained cast iron pans could be the last pans you ever have to buy versus other pans with less durability which need replacing.
There are some drawbacks to this set which really applies to most if not all cast iron vessels. They are heavy, more work to maintain, and more challenging to clean as you can’t just drop them in the dishwasher. If you are willing to put up with the maintenance piece, you won’t regret it though!
